Having an on-board watermaker is advantageous in many respects.  It is economical and will save you money in the long run.  Water is heavy, at approximately 8.3 pounds per gallon,  which can dramatically increase the weight of your boat and therefore increase fuel consumption.  By installing an on-board watermaker, you have water on demand and can save money in fuel.  Have peace of mind, knowing that you will always have a source of clean, potable water on your voyages, with no risk of viral or bacterial infections from alternate unclean water sources.

If your Nixie Watermaker is being consistently used, your membrane should be changed every 6 months.

To keep your watermaker in peak running condition, we recommend servicing your watermaker every 6 months.

To calculate the approximate gallon usage, divide the total gallon usage by the number of hours you think the system will be in use (typically a system will be used approximately 4-6 hours a day).  The resulting number is the gallon per hour rating of the required watermaker system (example 170 gallons used per day, divided by 5 hours of operation, would require a 34 gallon per hour system or a 900 gallon per day system.  Marine systems will range between 7-283 gallons per hour of operation (170-6,800 gallons per day).

Boats can consume a lot of water whether it be through drinking water, ice, dishwashers, laundry, showers, washing down the boat, many times people will underestimate just how much water they really need, which can cause people to be restrictive with their use of water.  We can help put your mind at ease with no more restrictions on water with our watermakers.

Our watermakers have the ability to last over 20 years when cared for properly.

Once our watermakers are installed, they make clean, potable water nearly immediatley.

Absolutely!  Our watermaker systems provide clean, low-mineral, water that tastes great!

Our watermakers work by using reverse osmosis technology. Which is a water purification process that uses a partially permeable membrane to separate ions, unwanted molecules and larger particles from drinking water.

Pickling is the process of preserving your reverse osmosis membranes long-term.  If you will not be flushing your Nixie Watermaker system for more than 2 weeks, we recommend pickling/preserving your reverse osmosis membranes.  Reverse osmosis membranes can be susceptible to bacterial growth when not flushed, which is why it is important to preserve our membranes by pickling them when not being flushed for more than 2 weeks.   We recommend Nixie Watermaker Pickling Solution with all our Nixie Watermaker reverse osmosis membranes.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification process that uses a partially permeable membrane to separate ions, unwanted molecules and larger particles from drinking (or in this case ocean or brackish) water.  In reverse osmosis, an applied pressure is used to overcome osmotic pressure, a colligative property that is driven by chemical potential differences of the solvent, a thermodynamic parameter.  Reverse osmosis can remove many types of dissolved and suspended chemical species as well as biological ones (principally bacteria) from water, and is used in both industrial processes and production of potable water.
